Why You Need A Black Turtleneck In Your Closet

I used to have a serious hate-hate relationship with turtlenecks as a kid. I thought they were itchy and felt trapped when I wore them. I took it extremely personally when my parents made me wear them. It felt like a form of fashion torture. (Dramatic, much?)

Now, I can’t get enough of them! I guess that’s adulting for you, huh?

Turtlenecks always look so effortlessly chic no matter what you pair them with, and a black turtleneck is *chef’s kiss*. Whenever I see one I’m instantly reminded of Audrey Hepburn, whom I adore, and how perfect she looked when wearing hers in Funny Face.

The perfect combination of simple and classy, this one item of clothing pairs perfectly with jeans, shorts, trousers, leggings, and even sweats, making it just as easy to complete an outfit featuring eclectic bottoms with a bold print, or dress up a fit with basic bottoms like solid colored leggings or joggers.

The Classic Ribbed Turtleneck

Tuckernuck
Why I Recommend This

Ribbed turtlenecks are one of the most commonly sought after and purchased turtleneck styles, making them easy to find and often available at affordable prices.

I like this turtleneck because it’s made with high quality material and is super comfy and stretchy without losing its shape quickly. It has a thicker fabric but is thin enough to be layered comfortably with a cardigan or sweater.

My favorite part is the fold back collar. While they come in many different styles, whenever I think of turtlenecks, this is what I envision. I feel so cozy when the fold of the material gently hugs the top of my neck. It’s the same feeling I get when I pull the covers up under my chin on a cold day. Total comfort.

It’s a clean look that just feels so…mature. Does that sound silly?

(My younger self might understand what I mean.)

The Merino Wool Blend Turtleneck

J. Crew
Why I Recommend This

I can’t imagine a cozier turtleneck for the winter months.

The merino wool used is exceptionally soft, as opposed to its scratchy counterparts. Known for being non-itch, lightweight, moisture-wicking, and silky smooth, merino wool is a natural fiber that you won’t get tired of wearing.

A word of caution: I’ve read that many allergy sufferers don’t fair well with marino wool. So if you’re prone to seasonal allergies or worse, I might skip this one.

The Spanx Turtleneck

Spanx
Why I Recommend This

You can’t help but feel snatched in Spanx!

This curve-hugging top is one of my faves, especially on days where I’m feeling extra toned. I workout hard, and sometimes I like to show off my hard work but without showing a lot of skin. This top is the perfect way to flaunt my physique in a way that feels authentic and sexy to me.

While it doesn’t have a fold down collar, I love this turtleneck because it has a tight fit that is flattering and isn’t overly restrictive. This stretchy top is made from breathable, quick-drying absorbent material that will make you feel at ease at any time of the day.

The Plush Rib-Knit Turtleneck

Old Navy
Why I Recommend This

Another ribbed turtleneck you’ll love at a lower price point!

The Little Black Shorts

How to Style Black Trouser Shorts

Wear these…

…with tights or without,

…at work or out and about,

…day or night

…with heels or flats

…with a long sleeve blouse or a crop top,

the little black shorts are ready for it all!

The Basic Black Trouser Short

Everlane
Why I Recommend This

There’s nothing overly special about this pair of shorts, and that’s what makes them work. “Simple” is sometimes most effective, and these shorts can be worn comfortably as you go through your daily routine, or as part of a work uniform where basic black dress shorts are required. Add tights or go barelegged, the choice is yours.

The Minimalist Trouser Short

Revolve
Why I Recommend This

I LOVE these shorts. If you’ve been on this blog for any length of time, you know that I’m a lover of clean lines. I love the minimal design of the front of the shorts and how there is absolutely nothing unnecessary added. No buttons, pockets, belts, nada. They are expertly structured, with a clean line down the center where the waistband clasps connect, and a perfectly even line where the short cuffs are folded. And, in case you need someplace to store your valuables, there are 2 sleek flat pockets in the back for your convenience.

All of this, plus the fact that they are high waisted, makes these shorts an excellent choice for your chic all-black look.

The Banded Waist Trouser Short

Alice & Olivia
Why I Recommend This

These have more frills than the last pair but I still consider them to have a clean design. The waist is shorter and banded. The shorts zip up in the back, and yes, the zipper is visible. There are 2 sets of pockets: front slash pockets and back welt pockets. And…

That’s it. But it’s enough haha. Another clean look to love.

The High-Waisted Linen-Blend Trouser Short

Old Navy
Why I Recommend This

Let’s address the elephant in the room…

These shorts are not the same quality as the others. They are made from different fabric, and are at a much lower price point, so you get what you pay for.

But that doesn’t stop them from being nice!

Many of us are used to the feel of linen fabric. These pants are comfortable, have a more relaxed fit, and are looser. They give me more “school uniform” vibes than “boss b!tch about to slay the day” vibes…and that’s okay!

With a pleated front, diagonal front pockets, a single back welt pocket, and a waistband that’s 1 inch higher than most high-waist pants, these shorts deserve their spot on this list.

There’s something for everyone on this list, and I hope you found what you’re looking for.
